Critical infrastructure upgrade

Replacing the servers that run an NHS customer's building management, access control and environmental control systems, without losing data or disrupting the sites that rely on them.

Support
10 years of firmware and drivers
Illustration: three new rack servers on separate sites, linked together

The challenge

  • The servers behind building management, access control and environmental controls were outdated
  • More storage and better data resilience were needed
  • Licensing and government guidelines had to be met
  • Downtime during the switch-over had to be minimal
  • Single points of failure had to go
  • The setup had to be cost-effective, modular and vendor-independent

What we did

  • Installed three high-performance SuperMicro rackmount servers, with modular parts and an extended warranty
  • Added 8TB of storage per server and faster data handling
  • Licensed the servers with Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
  • Disposed of the old hardware under NCSC and WEEE guidelines
  • Moved the data across in phases, with contingency plans to prevent loss
  • Spread workloads across multiple sites
  • Tested everything after go-live

The results

Built to last

A scalable setup with 10 years of firmware and driver support.

No single point of failure

Workloads spread across sites, so one fault doesn't stop everything.

Faster across sites

Better performance wherever the system runs.

Cheaper to upgrade

Modular parts mean lower upgrade costs and shorter repairs.

Compliant

Aligned with licensing, security and disposal rules.
